Lion Group Building MRO Centre On Indonesia’s Batam Island
JAKARTA, August 29, 2013 - Lion Group is building a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility on Indonesia's Batam island.
The new MRO centre, to be called Batam Aero Technic, will handle heavy maintenance for Lion Group airlines, as well as heavy checks for third-party customers.
Batam Aero Technic will have four widebody hangars, component repair and overhaul shops as well as an engine MRO centre that will include a test cell. Construction of the four hangars has already started, and the first two will be completed by year-end and the other two by the end of June 2014. Each hangar can accommodate either one Boeing 747-400 or three Boeing 737-900ERs simultaneously. Batam Aero Technic aims to open by year-end, once it is certified by Indonesia’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). It plans to begin by handling 737 airframe heavy maintenance checks.
Construction of the component shop and engine overhaul facility has yet to start, as the land is still being prepared for development. Besides airframes and engines, the plan is for Batam Aero Technic to also work on major aircraft systems, such as landing gears, avionics and auxiliary power units.
The 737 airframe heavy checks that Batam Aero Technic will undertake will complement Lion Group’s existing heavy maintenance hangar, at Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport, that uses land from the Indonesian navy.
One of the reasons why Lion Group chose to build a MRO centre at Batam, is because there is more land for expansion and the Batam authorities were able to make available land with runway access. Batam’s Hang Nadim International Airport, has a 4,000m-long runway capable of handling larger widebodies, such as the Airbus A380.
The close proximity to Singapore means the Batam-based MRO can tap Singapore's world-class logistics network, facilitating the flow and access to spare parts needed for repairs.
Lion Group aims to have Batam Aero Technic certified by Indonesia's Directorate General of Civil Aviation, as well as by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). DGCA certification means the centre can work on Indonesian-registered aircraft. EASA certification will help ensure the new MRO facility is permitted to work on aircraft registered overseas.
Lion Group president director, Rusdi Kirana, says Batam Aero Technic will provide a huge boost to employment for the local economy. He says the jobs created will be high skilled positions.
Romdani Adali Adang, the president of Lion Technic, which will manage Batam Aero Technic, says the new facility will have 2,000 employees.
