Lion Air Opens New Route for Umrah Flight

Jakarta, September 7, 2017 - Lion Air Group airline re-expands with the opening of its regular international routes. This time Lion Air opened Umrah flights directly from nine cities in Indonesia to Jeddah and also to Medina, Saudi Arabia. The flight is targeted to be operational by mid-October 2017.
Lion Air has previously served charter flights Umrah to Jeddah and Medina from Jakarta, Surabaya and Makassar.
The nine cities are Medan, Palembang, Pekanbaru, Padang, Tanjung Karang, Banda Aceh, Bandung, Solo, and Balikpapan. The flight will stop by or known as transit in Trivandrum, India for refueling.
Lion Air Group's Head of Corporate Secretary and Communications Andy M Saladin said the opening of the route was to accommodate the journey of Umrah pilgrims from several regions. That way, pilgrims no longer need to Jakarta or Surabaya or Makassar first to continue the journey to Jeddah and Medina.
"Currently flights to Jeddah and Medina are only from Jakarta, Surabaya and Makassar so pilgrims have to fly to Jakarta or Surabaya or Makassar just to continue their journey to Jeddah or Medina that’s quite consuming and draining time. With the flights to Jeddah and Medina from nine cities are expected the worshipers could worship in a fresh condition "he said.
"Direct flights to Medina are flights from Surabaya, Medan, Pekanbaru and Padang and the rest will fly to Jeddah. We plan to use a wide body aircraft that is Airbus A330-300 and also our latest narrow body aircraft Boeing 737 MAX-8 is capable of flying for 7.5 hours in full plane state, "he said again.
"Lion Air is the only airline in Indonesia that uses the latest aircraft type Boeing 737 MAX-8 and Lion Air Group is also a launch customer of Boeing 737 MAX-10," he concluded.
